The Avs have always been one of the best teams in hockey.  From the moment they moved to Denver in 1995, they have always fielded a competitive team.  The 2001-02 season was not as good as their last season, but they still clinched the Northwest Division title even without Peter Forsberg and the retired Ray Bourque.  Flashy rookies Vaclav Nedorost and Radim Vrbata debuted this season, as Colorado introduced some other rookies into the fold (Hahl, Krestanovich, Daw).  After a slow start to the season, the Avs picked it up.  Joe Sakic definitely deserves some Hart Trophy consideration for his solid play this season.
